Terry was a Defensive Linebacker and an Offensive Tackle for the Grapeland Sandies Football team and in the 1974 season they won the State Championship.  He was named All-State Defensive Linebacker as well as All-District Tackle.

After highschool he signed to play football with Tyler Junior College and from there he signed to play under the coaching of John David Crow at North East University in Monroe Louisiana and was a starting Defensive Linebacker for 3 years.
